Starting Out On eBay

eBay is perhaps the ultimate work at home business opportunity. During my recovery from a serious illness in 2006 I began selling things on eBay to keep my mind on the positive and not on illness. Within a short time I was clearing $4000 to $5000 monthly as an eBay Power Seller. Sign up for an eBay account here.

As an eBay seller you subscribe to the simplest of business principles: buy low, sell high. Simple, right? Yes. But there’s more to the formula. Here are a few things you’re going to need to know:

The Right Stuff
You need to sell items that people want. That sounds elementary but so many folks seem to ignore that very simple concept. Check eBay’s Pulse for hot selling items and popular sellers to learn what the big guys are doing. Ideally, you’ll be looking for items that require little handling and are inexpensive to ship. Clothes, software, music and information on CD are just a few items that fit this category. No need to try and reinvent the wheel. Simply find out what’s hot and sell it.

The Right Price
You need to be able to buy those things at enough of a discount that you’ll be able to flip them for a profit.

Take Care of Your Customers
You’ll need to provide impeccable customer service, ensuring that your feedback remains high. A high feedback rating is often a deciding factor when a potential customer makes a buying decision and has many choices.

Describe Your Stuff
Success on eBay depends on some attention to detail. What I mean is, you need to describe you items well. I’m amazed that people will sell a music CD without even listing the songs on the disk. I had many comments from buyers saying they purchased my stuff because it was described in detail. I’m talking about model numbers on electronics where appropriate and the condition of the item. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself what you’d want to know if you were in the market to buy such an item.

Write It Down
Keeping simple records of your auction activity is essential. So when you write up an auction, be sure to keep a file with every auction description. This will save you time as you are sure to be selling the same stuff over and over. Also keep all of your eBay pictures in a special file too. And last but not least, keep a daily record of all of the items you ship. Include the item, auction number, buyer’s name and address along with the date sold and the date shipped. And if you’re serious about making real money on eBay, ship your stuff out promptly. 99.9% of my stuff went out the day after the auction.
