Recycling Service Business

Want to do well while doing some good? Maybe a recycling home based business is the thing for you. What you’ll be doing is taking stuff people no longer need or want and turning it into dollars. You’ll find money in:

  • Plastic Bottles and other Plastics
  • Glass, Aluminum, Copper & Other Metals
  • Paper
  • Cell Phones

Take paper for example. Recycling centers are paying upwards of $50 per ton for newspapers and $75 per ton for cardboard. I can personally attest to the fact that there are hundreds of retailers that are more than happy to give you their cardboard boxes. I discovered how abundant (and free) cardboard boxes were a few years ago when I used recycled materials to ship items I was selling on eBay.

With nearly 5000 auctions to my credit in less than two years I was out of pocket for less than ten bucks in store-bought packaging thanks to recycled boxes. At just a dollar a box (which is way on the low side) I got to keep an additional $5000.

Business Within A Business, Recycled Boxes
Since most people selling stuff on eBay need shipping materials, why not offer them recycled boxes? You can get them for next to nothing if you pay a kid to find clean ones for you. You might pay $.10 or $.15 each for a clean, reusable box. If you don’t have kids around go out and get them yourself. Target medium and larger retail stores (Wal-Mart was happy to turn over their boxes to me) and try to get smaller boxes, as the demand for these on eBay is huge. I’ve personally done this and can attest to the demand. Believe me, this is profitable!

You’ll want to separate the box on the seam and retape it so the print on the outside doesn’t show. This takes all of about 30 seconds and a minute if you’re all thumbs. Maybe you can offer the box finder a little more for performing this service. You can offer these recycled boxes in bundles of a dozen or two on eBay and people will be glad to get a discount on the regularly high-priced box they’ve been used to buying and they’ll also be doing their part in keeping the cardboard out of the landfill.

If cardboard and newsprint seems too heavy and work-intensive you might want to focus on aluminum or plastic. Regardless of what you choose to recycle you’ll need a vehicle that will be able to haul the stuff and a recycling center nearby where you’ll be able to sell it.

There are a couple of ways to accumulate recyclable materials. The first is to go out and find it yourself. As I’ve already mentioned, cardboard is plentiful but requires a considerable amount of work. If work doesn’t bother you, the potential for earning several hundred dollars a day is there. All you need are the sources.

If you’d rather ‘work smart’ you might consider offering incentives to civic groups, churches and schools wanting to raise money. Allow them to do the gathering work and you do the grunt work by bringing the stuff to the recycling center and collecting the money. Of course, you’ll be paying a percentage of the proceeds to the folks doing the gathering.
