Real Estate Investing

Real estate was my first love and my first real success in business. Back in 1980 I got a hold of a copy of Robert Allen's book titled Nothing Down and was blown away with the principles he covered in that great best seller. I think I was most fascinated with the idea that virtually anyone with a plan and a good measure of determination could make a fortune buying and selling residential property, even if they didn't have capital. I still believe that basic premise is true today.

It took some time before I actually acted on the methods outlined in the book. Toward the end of the 1980s Mr. Allen was promoting a 4-day seminar teaching the techniques he covered in his book. The price of the seminar was $5000. I felt that was a pretty large chunk of cash in exchange for some information. Still, I was intrigued to have the opportunity to rub elbows with one of the real estate investing masters. So I scraped the money together to attend the training.

There were more than 300 attendees to this entrepreneurial event and there was also a massive amount of palpable positive energy present in the room. I soon learned that the instruction was divided into to categories. These were best described as "motivational" and creative real estate instruction. We spent the first two of four days going through motivational lectures and exercises.

I remember being quite upset spending time listening to what I felt were little more than silly pep talks and was pissed that we were devoting so much time with what I considered 'off topic' material. Finally, near the end of the second day we began to discuss real estate investing techniques. And I must say that when we finally got to what I considered the meat, the array of instructors and topics was first rate. I drank it in like a man lost in the desert would consume water.

Still, when I returned home I was upset that the curriculum had devoted so much time to what I considered nebulous stuff like motivation and self-improvement. Although I never formally complained I'd been very tempted to write a letter to Mr. Allen telling him that I wasn't pleased to have signed up for a real estate seminar only to find out that half of the time was spent with useless motivational rhetoric. I'm glad I never wrote that letter. Here's why:

In the course of my entrepreneurial travels since attending that life-changing seminar I discovered that one first needs to understand himself. What I mean is, unless you know why you want to make a lot of money, that money will never make you happy. What I discovered as a result of that very special event was that I'd been programmed almost from birth for failure. I was a product of parents who had been raised during the not so Great Depression and that they'd both picked up some non-productive ideas about prosperity and passed them on to me.

It was interesting to walk the path of self discovery. I saw personal patterns that were very revealing. For example, I had a great head for figuring out what would sell in the marketplace. I also had the determination and knowledge to make many of my business plans fly. The problem was that inside of me, deep within my subconscious I was programmed to believe that I wasn't worthy of wealth or riches because that was what had been passed on to me from my Depression-era parents.

And let me say this right now, this isn't about the blame game. Both of my parents did the best they could with what they had. An individual can only pass on what they have. And in the case of my folks, they felt they were doing me justice by explaining reality as they'd experienced it. And that was, "we're not the kind of people who experience wealth." Keep that in mind and if it strikes a chord with you, keep reading.

Okay, so what's the point? If you've gotten this far you might be wondering why I've spent so much time and space relaying this story. It's simple. Unless you first have your metaphysical house in order nothing else will work. Not your financial plans, your plans for ideal health or your love life. Oh, your intentions and efforts might be effective over the short term, but for lasting success and happiness to enter your life you're going to need to think about and practice the principals that truly bring peace. The concept wasn't quite as popular back then but it's now known as the law of attraction. And the law of attraction, properly understood and implemented will propel your core principals into reality.

What are those? Well, in brief, those principals and making them reality are what this site is all about. I'd like to say that Robert Allen was the guy who clued me in. But that wouldn't be completely accurate. He was simply a part of the equation. I also found that material success would only be temporary without incorporating balance into my life. The material you'll find on this site is designed to give you the soul tools as well as the business tools. I wish you peace and prosperity.
