Personal Development

Personal development is synonymous with self improvement. From the beginning of recorded history people have had a strong interest in becoming better. Through the ages philosophers have spoken and lectured on the topic. Personal development has also been the subject of many books and even movies. And the personal development movement has never been more popular than it is today.

Thousands of books, college classes, seminars, and videos are offered every year. One thing you might notice is that as the times change, the methods employed for self-improvement change too. Topics from the law of attraction to guided meditation fall under the heading of personal development.

The first book I remember on the topic was Dale Carnegie’s How To Win Friends And Influence People. It was a very influential book and was perhaps the forerunner to modern self-help trends. Even before I realized why I had an interest personal development I began to pick up books on the topic. One that stands out is I’m Ok, you’re Ok, by Thomas A. Harris M.D. I can still picture the book cover as it was literally everywhere in the early 1970s.

And excellent books from the distant past are surfacing too. A 100-year old classic titled The Science of Getting Rich is very popular these days.

Another notable book from that period is Winning Through Intimidation by Robert Ringer. Catchy title, huh? Many people thought this book was written to show people how to win by bullying. But the premise was exactly the opposite. It was written to show folks how to avoid being the victims of bullies.

Obviously, there have been tens of thousands of popular titles since I first discovered the field. In fact, I’ve benefited enormously from hypnosis and NLP and believe that many others can as well. In fact, I feel so strongly about these techniques that I’ve devoted a good deal of space on this site to information about NLP and hypnosis.
