Mastering Your-Self Talk
Have you ever stopped to think about what you say to yourself over the course
of a day? Chances are, you haven’t paid much attention to your own self-talk.
It’s my belief that everyone alive would do well to stop a minute and ponder
the thoughts, feelings and emotions percolating through their minds every minute
of the waking day. Why? Because in time we eventually become the product of our
dominant thoughts.
Some might argue that point. But consider this: Since the dawn of humanity
people have found reasons to fight. One race or nation has something another
group wants and they squabble for a while and eventually go to war. It’s been
going on for centuries. But here’s a little bit of truth about one of the few
things people have managed to agree upon. That is: in time we all evolve into
the personality that has been our prevailing self image.
Don’t believe it? Take a look at any holy book. The wisest individuals of
all races throughout history have been in absolute agreement on this point. This
powerful concept is the basis for one of the most amazing personal development
books of all times, The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles.
Light Bulb Moment, An Amazing Book
I discovered the book quite by accident and was truly intrigued by the title. I
actually though it was some sort of trick or marketing strategy. But it’s
real. Wattles takes ancient wisdom (the reality that we become the person of our
dominant thoughts and attitudes) and applies it scientifically to the process of
becoming wealthy.
In this short book the author describes the type of thinking and
behavior required to become a person of wealth. And he’s not simply talking
about richness of heart, but real spending-money wealth. Incidentally, one of
the collateral benefits to using the principles in the book is that richness of
the heart shows up too. Go figure, huh?
But mastering your self-talk isn’t just about becoming wealthy, it’s
about changing what we want to change by simply changing our thoughts. Before we
can change we have to first be aware of what we say both internally and
verbally. If you’re in the habit of continually insulting yourself you’re
reaping the results of that behavior. Have you ever said, Oh, what a dummy I am,
I forgot my wallet again. Or, I’ll never make it. Or, I keep dating losers. I
guess all the good guys are already taken. Or…
Guess what? When you repeat something long enough, it isn’t difficult for
that thought to find its way into your subconscious and then into your reality.
So stop doing it. I realize it’s easy to just say stop doing it while actually
stopping may present a challenge. Here’s how you can change your thinking.
Awareness Is The Beginning Of The End Of Negativity
First, be aware of what you repeat to yourself. If during the course of the day
you find yourself internalizing or repeating something disagreeable, give
yourself a brief timeout and replace the thought with the exact opposite. For
example, if you say, I never get anything right, I’m such a loser. That’s
powerful stuff and you’re not a loser unless you accept yourself as such. When
you find yourself saying that, stop and say, actually, I’m right much of the
time and winning my share as well.
At first, you might think, who am I fooling? And if that happens, correct
that thought too. Once again, awareness is the key. Depending on who you quote,
a habit takes about four weeks to establish and find a home in your
subconscious. And it doesn’t matter whether the habit serves you or not. Why
not replace your demeaning self talk with nurturing complements and watch what a
pleasant difference it makes in your life. Be well.
