In More Free Traffic Techniques we looked at blogging and video marketing as ways to get the word out about your products. In this piece we’re going to take a look at article marketing and its many advantages.

Before we do that I want to remind you that everything we’re discussing in these posts relates back to search engine optimization (SEO). When writing anything for publication online always be mindful of your optimal keywords and be sure to use them in your writing.

There was a trend in online marketing recently known as Bum Marketing. Without going into great detail, Bum Marketing is an approach to promoting your products where you have little or nothing out of pocket. Article marketing is one of the mainstays of bum marketing.

The concept is simple. There are thousands of Websites online known as article directories. These are sites that allow writers to post their articles. They also allow people looking for good written content to use the articles for various reasons such as content for their own sites and as email messages. To be able to use the content an individual must agree to keep the article intact and include the writer’s signature box, which contains a short blurb about the writer as well as a link to his or her site.

Let’s look at some of the benefits of article marketing:

Your articles hosted on one or more directories allow you to get the word out about you and your business
You have the chance to get your articles picked up by others, which also increases your visibility
If your articles are wisely optimized for search engines they will be available when people search for information on your topic
Since your articles will carry a signature box and a link back to your site, you’ll be more appealing to the search engines because the more backlinks you have pointing to your own site, the more the SE’s like you

As you can see there are a lot of advantages to article marketing. You might be thinking that writing articles is a good idea but just a bit outside your level of comfort. But you may have more aptitude for writing than you realize. There’s an easy formula to follow that will allow you to turn out informative articles like a pro. Here’s the template for writing an article:

Tell them you’re going to tell them. This is your introduction to the information. It’s short and to the point and paves the way for what’s to follow.
Tell them. This is where you give the reader the information you’ve described in your title and introduction.
Tell them you’ve told them. This summarizes the info in an orderly fashion and serves as a review of your piece.

Simple, huh? Notice how I started this post. I mentioned what we'd discussed in a previous post and then introduced the current topic. Then I went into the information you’re reading now, and in another short paragraph, I’ll be summarizing it all. If you really want to get free traffic you might want to practice up on your writing a bit. And if you’d rather not, there are people that would be more than happy to write for you. And you might be surprised at how affordable many of them are.
