Conversational Hypnosis

Conversational hypnosis is a hot topic. Why? Because it’s often touted as a method of mind control and people like to believe that they might be able to control the mind of another. Is it possible to control someone else? Yes and no. Strictly speaking, it isn’t possible to control someone without using force. However, you can control others with their permission. Seems like a contradiction, doesn’t it? It isn’t really.

Conversational hypnosis is a method of persuasion, very often strong persuasion, available to those with particular skills. The skills mainly involve observation and the knowledge to put certain observations to use. Let’s look at some of these skills and then tie the whole thing back to getting someone’s permission to control them.

Rapport
To have  success persuading an individual you must first establish rapport with them. You can accomplish this in many ways. One of those ways is to relate to similarities you share with an individual, something you have in common, whether it be a friend, the admiration of a celebrity, your hometown or anything else. The stronger the connection, the more effective the rapport.

Mirror and Matching For Rapport Building
Another method you might use for building rapport is mirroring and matching. This is the subtle art of mimicking another. And when I say subtle, it must be so or you run the risk of completely blowing the entire rapport building process.

The rationale behind mirroring and matching another is that the individual unconsciously realizes that you’re very much like they are. And people tend to like and accept others who are like them. To achieve this you might emulate their speech, their breathing or move in a similar way. This is a powerful rapport builder. Of course, there are other techniques used to establish rapport and we’ll look at them as we go forward.

With rapport established you have ‘unofficial  permission’ to persuade or temporarily ‘control’ a person. Most often we see conversational hypnosis sold as a covert way to seduce or influence someone to buy a product. In fact, covert hypnosis is another name used to describe conversational hypnosis as sleight of mouth.

So, you can see that there really isn’t any way to influence another without first getting their permission through building rapport. I’ll continue the discussion of conversational hypnosis and further explore even more effective rapport builders in a post titled Covert Hypnosis. See you there.
