Are Hypnosis Recordings Effective?
The question comes up frequently in discussions of hypnosis: are
self-improvement hypnosis recordings any good? The answer to this varies. For
any intervention to be effective several factors must be present. First, is the
subject open and willing to change? And, are they wanting the change for
personal reasons or to please someone else?
Must Be Personal
If an individual decides to lose weight because a spouse or significant other
has been nagging them to, then the true motivation, the sincere drive to reach
and maintain a reasonable weight is missing – and without a personal stake in
the goal, results are certain to be non-existent or greatly compromised. This
goes for any goal, from weight loss and smoking to building self esteem and
overcoming procrastination – the goal must be personal.
Providing the goal is personal and truly self-motivated, hypnosis recordings
then have a chance of working providing they contain two important elements.
Let’s look at the first of these: the recording must address the symptoms of
the condition. In other words, there must be post hypnotic suggestions dealing
with the desire to overcome smoking, weight loss, etc. For example, a recording
designed to help someone stop smoking should contain language like: just the
idea of smoking feels very unnatural to you and you experience no ill effects as
you release the smoking habit.
Most self-improvement hypnosis tapes do an adequate job of addressing the
symptomatic causes of the condition. But I believe there’s more to it than
just symptomatic treatment. For a recording to be truly effective it must
address the underlying root cause of the behavior. You see, in my experience, most non-supportive behavior,
whether it’s overeating, smoking, drugs, overindulgence in alcohol, virtually
anything, is a substitute for something missing in a person’s life. And often,
what is missing revolves around issues of self-respect, self-love, self-esteem
or self-worth.
So, when a hypnosis recording addresses both the symptoms of the condition
and the root causes, and the subject really wants to make a change, there is a
excellent chance the change will not only happen, but will be a lasting change.
With regard to quitting smoking, suggestions aimed at underlying root causes
might be: you honor, love and respect yourself in every aspect of your life
and you are the master of all of your thoughts and behaviors.
It isn’t always easy to accept the idea that there is something going on at
the unconscious level driving the undesired behavior. But think about it for a
moment, in a perfect world where all people were psychologically faultless, we
would not need to use destructive behavior to feel good. In a perfect world, we
would have developed with the necessary skills and tools to meet virtually any
challenge. And without such skills, people turn to non-supportive practices to
receive gratification. Hypnosis is an excellent way to eliminate unwanted
behavior and add the resources we desire.
